Monday morning, Part 8 of an 8-Part Series, this one cuts deep, the God Complex…
This job won’t save your marriage…
This job won’t make you a better Dad…
This job won’t fulfill your hobbies…
This job won’t last…
A couple of weeks ago we hosted our 2nd Annual Stressed Leaders Summit to a thunderously positive response. It was an event full of gratitude. In my opening keynote, I shared actionable steps for improved leadership response. I’ve always enjoyed conferences where you have real, tangible takeaways, not sit and get fests. I am a man of action and, sadly, a lot of conferences fail to deliver on that action. As a subscriber, I’ll be sharing a takeaway each day with you for real, authentic actions you can take as a leader to avoid the pitfalls and snares that trap us. This isn’t rocket science, and I didn’t invent this wheel, some of these actions are compliments of Danny Bauer- Chief Ruckus Maker on “How to do school differently…”
8. The GOD Hero Complex
Your job can't fill what your life is missing.
This one stings. Just like yesterday, when I questioned your faith, when I questioned, can you handle hard truths, this one hurts? Why does it hurt, because it is true. It is true for me and I’m guessing, it is true for YOU.
Leadership won't complete you. Another award won't fix your marriage. Another school district recognition trophy won't tuck your kids in at night.
Schedule joy. Protect rest. Be a whole human — not a heroic martyr.
Try this instead: Block "non-negotiable" time in your calendar for what matters most. Family dinner. Your workout. Reading time. Date night with your wife. The long weekend getaway.
THE PIVOT: Treat those above sacred items like board meetings — they don't get moved.
That statement, right there, is not true for many leaders.
You would never miss a board meeting, right?
I have come to board meetings sick, tired, exhausted… I’ve missed my kid’s games for board meetings. I’ve missed honorary and ceremonial dinners with my wife for board meetings… I’ve missed my kid’s performances for board meetings, but do I have the same calendar death grip on my family time? Do you? That one stings a bit, because it is the hard truth, the cold reality.
Burned-out leaders don't build legendary schools.
The Real Talk Moment- you are NOT God, you are NOT the Hero.
Every "yes" is a tiny vote for what your life becomes.
Your calendar is a confession of your priorities. And right now, it might be confessing that you value everyone else's agenda more than your own.
HERE’s THE CHALLENGE>>>>> The SHOCK To The System!
Say no — once today — on this Monday, reclaim your time, say NO to something that doesn't align with your real priorities. Pick ONE thing to say NO to.
Then use that reclaimed time to lead boldly, rest deeply, or just eat lunch without replying to email between bites.
Leadership isn't about being busy.
It's about being brave.
And sometimes, brave starts with "No."
You aren’t GOD, and you are not the HERO of the school’s story. You can be the HERO at home, however to your spouse and kids.
